The Max streaming service, just like the premium cable channel it spawned from, HBO, prioritizes quality over quantity. Therefore, don’t expect too much in the vein of “tons of content” coming to either service this September. What they do have premiering this month, however, is very exciting for the channel and the streaming platform tied to it. A documentary about a beloved HBO series and a large-scale spin-off show tied to a recent successful blockbuster complement a healthy offering of recent A24 films and old classics that are being added to Max. Without further ado, here are the new arrivals for HBO and Max in September 2024.
Far and away, the most notable HBO/Max premiere of September 2024 is DC’s The Penguin. A spin-off of The Batman, the HBO original series created by Lauren LeFranc follows crime boss Oswald “Oz” Cobb (Colin Farrell), also known as “The Penguin,” as he establishes himself as the kingpin of Gotham City’s criminal underbelly. Supervised by The Batman director Matt Reeves, The Penguin — which at this time is set to be a limited miniseries only — will introduce the characters of Sofia Falcone (Cristin Miloti) and Salvatore Maroni (Clancy Brown). This builds out the spin-off series as something like “Batman by way of The Sopranos.” Thus, DC fans have much to look forward to when The Penguin debuts its first episode on September 19, 2024.
Speaking of miniseries and The Sopranos, the two-part HBO original documentary series Wise Guy: David Chase and the Sopranos hits the Max streaming platform on September 7, 2024. The Sopranos has consistently been in the public consciousness; it’s an HBO show that has stood the test of time with constant discussion. Wise Guy promises to pull back the curtain on elusive creator David Chase and many other elements behind the show’s creation and evolution. Whether or not the HBO docuseries actually is enlightening will likely depend on how much the viewer already knows about the behind-the-scenes of The Sopranos. Still, it’s hard to imagine even the most seasoned Sopranos fanatics skipping out on Wise Guy.
One Max original series that might be going under the radar is Coming From America. The unscripted series follows four African-American families who pack up their lives in America to seek out their African roots and build a life anew. The Max docuseries airs the first of its six episodes on September 5, 2024. Just one day later, Studio Ghibli and Hayao Miyazaki’s The Boy and the Heron will finally be making its streaming debut on Max. Last year’s Oscar winner for Best Animated Feature will be available on September 6, 2024 in both Japanese and its English dub, the latter featuring a truly memorable performance from actor Robert Pattinson as the titular Heron.
Moving on, two recent much-talked-about A24 movies are about to get added to Max in September 2024. The first is Civil War, which will drop on the service on September 13, 2024. Alex Garland’s film, about a group of journalists (Kirsten Dunst, Wagner Moura, Cailee Spaeny, and Stephen McKinley Henderson) who travel across a war-torn America, has caused rigorous debate, so it’s worth tuning in to be part of the conversation. Jane Schoenbrun’s highly-acclaimed I Saw The TV Glow then hits the streamer on September 20, 2024. The psychological drama, which follows two teenagers’ obsession with a ’90s television program, touches on transgender identity as well, mixing analog horror with deeply felt insight into the trans experience.
Other films hitting Max this month include the 2023 Best Picture winner Everything Everywhere All At Once, coincidentally an A24 film as well. Another A24 picture that just arrived on Max is Gaspar Noé’s Climax, though this one might only be for audiences with a strong stomach. For families, all 8 of the mainline Harry Potter movies are now streaming in September 2024. DC fans looking for their Batman fix before The Penguin can check out the animated film Batman: Gotham by Gaslight, which brings a very different look at the caped crusader. Additionally, Anaconda has been added this September, too, for those not in the know about the original 1997 film that will apparently inspire the reported upcoming Jack Black and Paul Rudd pseudo-sequel/remake.
Last but not least, Max subscribers looking to get the fall spooky season started a little early can now stream timeless horror films like William Friedkin’s The Exorcist and Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining and even newer favorites like Final Destination and Trick ‘r Treat in September 2024.
