The Max streaming service is ringing in the new year in style in January 2025. There’s a healthy amount of films and shows, both original and from HBO, getting added to Max, so let’s hop right into what the streaming platform has to offer. First on deck is the Max original series, The Pitt. The concept for this Max show is a novel one. Here’s the pitch: a tense medical drama wherein each episode follows just one hour of the 15-hour shift of Dr. Michael “Robby” Rabinavitch (Noah Wyle), the chief attendant in Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Hospital’s emergency room.

Created by R. Scott Gemmill of ER and NCIS: Los Angeles fame, The Pitt‘s unique format highlights American healthcare workers and other frontline heroes in ways no other medical drama currently on the air can. Max subscribers can see for themselves when The Pitt has its two-episode premiere on January 9, 2025, with new episodes then releasing weekly. Next up on the docket is season 5 of the irreverent Max original series Harley Quinn. Based on the iconic DC comic book character of the same name, the Max series has been lauded for its raunchy humor as well as the loving relationship between its titular criminal-turned-hero clown (Kaley Cuoco) and Poison Ivy (Lake Bell).

Harley Quinn Season 5 sees HQ, Ivy, and the gang move from Gotham City to Metropolis, teaming up with Superman and Lois Lane to uncover a nefarious plot involving iconic villains like Lex Luthor and Brainiac that subverts all expectations. The streaming series brings yet another stacked voice cast for its fifth season, including Diedrich Bader, Stephen Fry, Ron Funches, Natalie Morales, JB Smoove, and Alan Tudyk. Harley Quinn Season 5 launches on January 16, 2025, with new episodes then debuting weekly. With this show and also the remaining episodes of James Gunn’s Creature Commandos, the year is just getting started for DC fans, leading up to the much-anticipated Summer 2025 premiere of James Gunn’s Superman in theaters.

Beloved indie distributor A24 is bringing several of its 2024 releases to the Max streaming platform at the beginning of the year. The most notable is A Different Man, making its Max streaming debut on January 17, 2025. The award-winning film follows Edward (Sebastian Stan), an insecure man with the genetic disorder neurofibromatosis who undergoes radical surgery to change his facial appearance. Once transformed into an attractive man, Edward begins to reckon with ugly feelings as another man with neurofibromatosis, Oswald (Adam Pearson), beats him out for a role in a play his charming neighbor, Ingrid (Renate Reinsve), wrote about his own life. A Different Man has been called subversive, darkly funny, and incredibly thought-provoking, making it a must-watch.

A24 is bringing two more movies to Max’s streaming library in January 2025. The first is The Front Room. The horror film centers on Belinda (Brandy), a pregnant woman who faces a new kind of pain when her mother-in-law Solange (Kathryn Hunter) moves into the, you guessed it, front room of their house. Her discomfort grows into something more sinister as Solange seems to have nefarious plans for her unborn child. The Front Room begins streaming on Max on January 3, 2025. The other A24 movie to cue up this month is Look Into My Eyes, a documentary about psychics and their deeply personal readings. Look Into My Eyes arrives on January 10, 2025.

Speaking of documentaries, that realm is being well served on Max this January. The Max original film Sons of Ecstacy is not to be missed. Premiering on January 9, 2025, the Max documentary details a critical and tense moment in the ecstasy drug trade in the United States. Up next, the HBO original series, An Update on Our Family, arrives on January 15, 2025. The docu-miniseries dives into the controversial world of family vloggers on social media, specifically focusing on Myka and James Stauffer and the sudden absence of their adopted son, Huxley, from their popular YouTube videos, which raised questions. Both of these titles will further boost the collection of rich documentaries Max continues to provide its subscribers.

Regarding older gems, January 2025 brings a few notable additions to Max. For fans of Bradley Cooper’s A Star is Born, the 1937 version will begin streaming at the top of the month in all of its Technicolor glory. Likewise, there’s a double dose of Batman animated features coming to Max with Batman: The Killing Joke and Batman: Mask of the Phantasm. Additionally, those in the mood for a raunchy comedy can have a double feature with Hot Tub Time Machine and its sequel. Other genre-defining classics getting added to Max in January 2025 include Luca Guadagnino’s Call Me By Your Name, David Lynch’s Blue Velvet, and George Miller’s original Mad Max.

David Robert Mitchell’s It Follows is coming back to Max this month as well, great timing considering that its long-awaited sequel, They Follow, is heading into production in 2025. Finally, those who recently enjoyed Wicked, starring Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo, in theaters can stream director Jon M. Chu’s earlier rom-com smash, Crazy Rich Asians, on Max in the new year, too. Discover more on our monthly recs below, then check out the list of every film and TV show coming to HBO and Max in January 2025. You can also find what’s new this month on Netflix, Prime Video, and Disney+/Hulu right here on DiscussingFilm.
