New Arrivals for HBO & Max February 2024

All eyes are on the Curb Your Enthusiasm Season 12 premiere on Max in February 2024. The Golden Globe and Emmy-winning HBO original series is finally coming to an end after first airing in the year 2000. Creator/star Larry David has continued to defy comedy norms on television for 24 years now, and this final season is shaping up to be something special. Series regulars Cheryl Hines, Jeff Garlin, Susie Essman, J.B. Smoove, and Richard Lewis are all back and are joined by another list of surprise guest stars, who usually either play over-the-top versions of themselves or Hollywood caricatures. One of these guest stars is Troy Kotsur, who won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor in 2022 for his performance in CODA.

Tokyo Vice Season 2 is another major premiere to look out for on Max in February 2024. Created by J.T. Rogers, Tokyo Vice is based on American journalist Jake Adelstein’s memoir Tokyo Vice: An American Reporter on the Police Beat in Japan. Ansel Elgort (West Side Story) stars as Adelstein in the Max original series and is joined by the always-great Ken Watanabe (The Creator) as Hiroto Katagiri, a veteran detective in Tokyo’s vice squad. The two dive into the neon-soaked criminal underworld of early ’00s Japan, doing whatever it takes to seek the truths behind the Yakuza. Rinko Kikuchi (Pacific Rim), Rachel Keller (Legion), Show Kasamatsu (Gannibal), and Ayumi Ito (YuYu Hakusho) all return this season, with Yosuke Kubozuka (Silence) and Miki Maya (a former top star of the all-female Takarazuka Revue theater troupe) joining the cast as new series regulars.

Already available to enjoy on Max this month is Clone High Season 2. Phil Lord and Christopher Miller successfully brought back their cult animated series last year, after it was originally canceled by MTV in 2003. The second season of the revival series (which is really the third season overall) continues to spice things up for everyone’s favorite historical teenage clones. After trying to murder everyone at the end of last season, Joan of Arc (Nicole Sullivan) is now an outcast. This causes a ripple effect in the social hierarchy, leading to all kinds of new friendships, rivalries, and love triangles. Abe Lincoln (Will Forte), Cleopatra (Mitra Jouhari), Harriet Tubman (recent Emmy-winner Ayo Edebiri), Frida Kahlo (Vicci Martinez), Confucius (Kelvin Yu), Topher Bus (Neil Casey), Principal Scudworth (Phil Lord), and Chris Miller as both John F. Kennedy and Mr. Butlertron all return.

The late-night news satire series Last Week Tonight with John Oliver debuts its 11th season on HBO and Max on February 18. Fresh off its 2 wins at the recent Emmys, now is the perfect time for Max subscribers to add this show to their regular viewing schedules. The streamer has debuted a new reality series this month as well, titled Chasing Flavor. Celebrity chef and best-selling author Carla Hall takes viewers on a global tour to uncover the hidden origins behind the most popular American dishes. Finally, a show made for both foodies and history buffs. There’s something for documentary lovers too. God Save Texas is a new three-part HBO original docuseries that explores the unique issues of three different Texas cities through a personal lens. The first part, “Hometown Prison,” comes from director Richard Linklater, who also recently directed Hit Man starring Glen Powell.

Plenty of new films just got added to the Max’s revolving streaming library. At the top of this list is A24‘s Dicks: The Musical. Writers Josh Sharp and Aaron Jackson adapt their off-Broadway musical smash in hilariously chaotic directed by Larry Charles (Borat). A pair of identical twins separated at birth join forces to reunite their divorced parents, played by none other than Nathan Lane and Megan Mullally. Rap star Megan Thee Stallion, Bowen Yang (Saturday Night Live), and Tom Kenny (SpongeBob SquarePants) also co-star in the movie. Other notable new arrivals on Max this February include Ari Aster’s Midsommar, David Fincher’s Se7en, and Stanley Kubrick’s Full Metal Jacket and A Clockwork Orange.

Max subscribers who recently enjoyed Godzilla Minus One in theaters will want to check out Godzilla 2000 now that it’s streaming on the platform. Godzilla 2000 marked the beginning of the Millennium Era for Toho’s iconic kaiju franchise. Funny enough, the movie was made as a direct response to Roland Emmerich’s Godzilla from 1998. Both films just got added to the platform, which could make for an ironic double feature! Lastly, Sofia Coppola’s The Bling Ring is now on the streaming service. The underrated crime flick is a good recommendation for fans getting into Coppola’s filmography after the release of Priscilla.
