New Arrivals for HBO Max October 2021

by Andrew J. Salazar
Zendaya and Timothée Chalamet stand together with their eyes glowing bright blue as seen in DUNE directed by Denis Villeneuve, coming to HBO Max in October 2021.

Following multiple breakout hits in September, HBO Max is looking to up the ante in October – possibly to the highest it’s ever been for this streaming service. And this is no exaggeration, with the release of Dune and a long list of original series programming, October could be one of the biggest months for HBO Max in terms of numbers. From Denis Villeneuve’s latest sci-fi spectacular to the highly-anticipated third season of Succession, subscribers won’t be let down when it comes to receiving varied, top-quality storytelling.

This month’s two major day-and-date film releases will surely draw in their respective dedicated fans. In addition to its highly celebrated source material, the star-power of Dune is unparalleled. The cast is stacked from top to bottom, putting almost every single knowing eye on the project. But don’t go underestimating The Many Saints of Newark. A prequel to The Sopranos, which is quite literally one of the most beloved pieces of modern television, the film will have no trouble reaching its massive target audience.

Succession won’t be the only returning Emmy-winning series. The fifth and final season of Insecure will definitely be high on the watch list, along with the eleventh season of the quintessential comedy Curb Your Enthusiasm. As far as originals exclusive to HBO Max go, make sure to keep an eye out for new runs of Love Life, Selena + Chef, and the DC mini-series event Aquaman: King of Atlantis. Learn more on our recs and see the whole list of everything coming to and leaving HBO Max in October 2021 below. This month’s new Arrivals for Netflix and Disney+ can also be found right here on DiscussingFilm.

Our Recs:

The Many Saints of Newark

The Many Saints of Newark follows the one and only Tony Soprano in his earliest days tied to the family business. With Sopranos creator David Chase overseeing this prequel hands-on, specifically choosing Alan Taylor to direct since he helmed his favorite episodes of the show, longtime viewers are in for a very special treat, to say the least.

The film promises to dive deep into Sopranos lore, introducing new key players along the way. Alessandro Nivola, Leslie Odom Jr., Jon Bernthal, Corey Stoll, Ray Liotta, and Vera Farmiga star in the mob flick with Michael Gandolfini front as center as young Tony Soprano, the role that defined his late father, James Gandolfini, as one of the all-time greats.

The Many Saints of Newark premieres on HBO Max (through the 14.99/month Ad-Free Plan) October 1!

Aquaman: King of Atlantis

DC fans won’t be left empty this month either. Coming from James Wan under his Atomic Monster Productions branch with visuals provided by Warner Bros. Animation, Aquaman: King of Atlantis is a much-welcomed original entry to HBO Max’s DC library. The three-part mini-series event will give further exposure to the Aquaman mythos through good old-fashioned lighthearted adventures.

The talented voice cast is made up of Cooper Andrews, Gillian Jacobs, Thomas Lennon, and Dana Snyder. Each episode will run for 45 minutes and release on a weekly basis. As a bonus, the first part comes out just in time for this year’s DC FanDome.

Aquaman: King of Atlantis splashes onto HBO Max October 14!

Succession: Season 3

HBO’s hit satirical drama is back, and the Succession craze couldn’t be higher from eager audiences. Due to pandemic delays, the season three premiere arrives an entire two years after the gripping season two finale. And judging from everything shown so far, the Roy family are wasting no time in getting back on their bullsh*t.

The show has huge plans for the next wave of episodes. New chaotic additions to the cast include Alexander Skarsgård, Adrien Brody, and Sanaa Lathan. Some notable filmmakers have been confirmed to be directing a few episodes as well, Cathy Yan (Birds of Prey) and Lorene Scafaria (Hustlers) being such names.

Season Three of Succession kicks off on HBO Max October 17!

Dune

The latest on-screen adaptation of Frank Herbert’s pivotal 1965 novel, Denis Villeneuve’s Dune is posed to be the blockbuster event of 2021. The cast speaks for itself; prominent names like Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Oscar Isaac, and Jason Momoa almost guarantee success when billed together. But there’s even more to this film than its extremely promising acting prospects.

“Ultimately, with a film of this scale, there is an intention to entertain the audience but not overwhelm them by cramming a universe that is too expansive to cover into an already longer than average feature, in which Dune is victorious.” Scope is the name of Villeneuve’s game, and he’s playing it patiently. There’s plenty of more ground to cover in this world, and by delivering grand visuals in a way that only he can, Villeneuve could soon have the next great film saga on his hands with a sequel or two.

UPDATE: Dune will now hit HBO Max (through the 14.99/month Ad-Free Plan) one day earlier than planned on October 21!
